Liquid Chalk – Benefits Over Traditional Powder Magnesium Carbonate

Liquid chalk is a reinvention of the age old white powder, magnesium carbonate. Magnesium carbonate powder, also known as simply ‘chalk’, has been used by athletes from various sports including gymnastics, calisthenics, rockclimbing, bouldering and weightlifting.

Magnesium carbonate enhances grip for hard-to-grip surfaces, especially smooth metal, wood and rubber. Magnesium carbonate’s usefulness comes from its affinity to water. The chemical powder absorbs sweat and other fluids, creating better contact between the hands and the surface in question.

A block of chalk is typically broken into small fragments which can be crushed between the palms to create a fine powder coating. Alternatively a complete block can be used to coat the palms, however this method is usually less effective as the chalk is harder to get between the creases of the palms.

The magnesium carbonate can also be applied directly to surfaces. This is done in rock climbing – where it is applied to artificial boulders and in gymnastics where it is applied to metal and wooden apparatuses. When applied to wood, sometimes any initial thin coating of honey is used to help the chalk stick better.

Introducing Liquid Chalk

Liquid chalk, sometimes called climbing chalk, is a reinvention of the age old white powder, magnesium carbonate. Magnesium carbonate powder, also known as simply ‘chalk’, has been used by athletes from various sports including gymnastics, calisthenics, rockclimbing, bouldering and weightlifting.

  1. Liquid chalk sticks to your hands better. Magnesium carbonate powder is notorious for coming off easily and needs to constantly be reapplied to the hands. The special formula of liquid chalk allows it to coat the hands more completely before hardening into a white coating. You will find that liquid chalk is able to get into every last crease of your hands, providing a longer lasting and better grip.

  2. Unlike the powder, liquid chalk has anti-microbial properties rendered to it by the addition of alcohol. This is particularly beneficial in the age of COVID, as the alcohol will keep your hands significantly cleaner than the traditional powder chalk.

  3. Powder chalk is messy and typically comes in blocks that break into fine dust. Liquid chalk comes in convenient bottles that take up less room and don’t create any mess at all! You won’t ever have to worry about keeping your chalk secured in annoying boxes and bags to prevent spillage in your backpack. Many gyms have banned the use of powder chalk for this reason, but still allow liquid chalk products.

  4. Liquid chalk tends to last longer than powder chalk. This is because there is a huge amount of waste with powder chalk as the magnesium carbonate dust comes off the hands and other surfaces, and is easily carried away by the slightest breeze. With liquid chalk there is minimal waste as the chalk sticks to everything it touches and doesn’t easily come off.

  5. The powder chalk will have you gasping for air, as the chalk dust gets in your lungs. This is especially problematic for those that suffer from asthma. This is not an issue with liquid chalk. Moreover, many liquid chalk variations also have pleasant aromas and can make your training more pleasant.

“Liquid Chalk is a revolutionary product in the Calisthenics World”

Once you try liquid chalk you never go back. The formula is more convenient, cleaner and just damn right better in every way. Liquid chalk will give you that extra boost of performance you need to hit that muscle up, deadlift or climb.
